Val di Noto

Art, history and culture of the Sicilian Val di Noto

The southeast of Sicily is set apart by the presence of numerous Baroque-style cities, which in 2002 were recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. This area of Sicily is called Val di Noto or Vallo di Noto, and it was once an administrative district responsible for the judicial management of the entire feud, treasury, and militia of the Kingdom of Sicily. Its name derives from the city of Noto. It is a locality in the province of Siracusa, the main seat of the governor of the Vallo.

In 1693, a terrible earthquake reduced much of the territory of the Val di Noto to rubble. It happened the same to the urban memory of this area. Subsequent reconstructions of the razed cities have had an architectural and artistic construction system conceived as a work of art: the "late Baroque" became the distinctive symbol of this vast territory, one of the greatest expressions in the world of the late European Baroque.

The cities included in the Val di Noto are: Caltagirone, Catania, Militello in Val di Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa, Ispica, and Scicli. The recognition in the UNESCO World Heritage List has determined a very positive economic impact in this area, in the face of a significant increase in tourist numbers. By ideally connecting all the cities that are part of the Val di Noto, you can create a perimeter that traces the boundaries of one of the most fascinating and attractive areas of south-eastern Sicily.

Cava Ispica, one of the most significant archaeological quarries in southern Italy, has been inhabited from the Bronze Age until the 1960s. In this site, there are burial grounds, rock churches, and buildings carved into the rock. The coast is set apart by long sandy beaches, dunes, and rocky headlands that make the landscape spectacular.

The Hyblean territory is set apart by vast fields bordered by the typical dry stone walls (whose construction technique is a World Heritage Site), by the Mediterranean scrub, and by great cultivations of olive, almond, carob trees, and fragrant and genuine vegetables. The Grand Canyons, which here take the name of Cave, make the landscape unique.
