Every city and town has its own symbolic festival, and Scicli is no exception. On the last Saturday of May, the Madonna delle Milizie is celebrated, involving not only the people of Scicli but also numerous tourists.
The festival includes a theatrical representation of the battle that took place in 1901 near Donnalucata, between the Saracens and the Normans. The Christians emerged victorious, freeing Scicli from the enemy. According to legend, the Virgin Mary intervened just when the Normans were about to succumb. A warrior on horseback appeared from an enormous cloud and threw herself into the fray, and it was the Madonna delle Milizie.
From 24 to 26 May 2024, Scicli will transform into a medieval village for a long weekend. Don't miss the Turk's Head Festival, a turban-shaped dessert made to celebrate the Normans' victory over the Saracens.
