Oily Fish Festival 2025

Oily fish will take center stage this summer in Marzamemi. The small seaside village, which is built entirely on the sea, is getting ready for the 11th edition of the Oily Fish Festival, scheduled to take place from June 29th to July 2nd.

The event was created with the aim of raising awareness and appreciation for the qualities of a fish that is often considered humble, but is in fact rich in both nutritional value and history. However, the festival is not just about this story. These days provide an opportunity to celebrate the traditions of the local fishermen, who are the heart of Marzamemi and have made a living from fishing. In 1912, realizing the profitability of fishing, a decision was made to construct a large factory for the production of salted tuna and tuna in oil, known as the tonnara. The tuna industry thrived for several years but permanently closed in 1969. Despite this, the people of Marzamemi continue to sustain themselves through fishing.

The Oily Fish Festival is an event that offers visitors a chance to experience the true essence of traditions, accompanied by great music, art exhibitions, and delicious, fresh, locally-sourced food.
